Religious Studies Curriculum 3 I’s
Vision and Intent
The RS curriculum at Maltings Academy is determined to develop students as independent learners who understand different cultures, religions and lives in the world we live in.
The Maltings RS curriculum will enable learners to:
Explain and interpret ways that the history and culture of religions and worldviews influence individuals and communities, including a wide range of beliefs and practices, in order to appraise reasons why some people support and others question these influences.
Discuss and evaluate important issues in religion and philosophy, including: what religion is, ultimate questions and ethical issues.
Explore different ways of expressing beliefs and values in architecture, music , media and the arts building up an awareness and understanding of diversity.
Use reasoned, balanced arguments to reflect on and evaluate carefully their own beliefs and values and those of others.
Evaluate critically how religion is portrayed in the media and society, recognising stereotypes and misrepresentation.
Subject Implementation
The RS curriculum is delivered through 1 lesson a week with clear mapping of assessment points, substantive & disciplinary knowledge for each Scheme of Learning. Students begin Year 7 with a comparative study exploring the history of religion and the use of symbols. This continues in Year 7 and 8 where student’s discover and develop their understanding of four key religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism. In Year 9, this knowledge is developed further through philosophy and ethics. Throughout each Key Stage Religious Studies is implemented through tutor sessions, the PDC curriculum and whole year assemblies.
The implementation of the RS curriculum includes:
A commitment to interleaving RS to build up knowledge through knowledge recall quizzes at the start of each lesson.
Clear links to literacy through extended writing, oracy (debates), and key terminology, which are embedded throughout each unit and using religious texts to develop reading.
Making authentic links: seeing connectivity to all areas of learning including History, Science, and Geography.
Homework tasks planned and implemented for each unit to continue the development of students’ knowledge and understanding of the subject.
