Physical Education
PE Curriculum 3 I’s
Vision and Intent
Curriculum intent statement for physical education at Maltings Academy is influenced by the core aims of the national curriculum.
Through physical education, students will experience an extensive range of activities that provide and promote positive health and wellbeing through being physically active for sustained periods of time. The curriculum provides a foundation for students to develop confidence to partake in physical activities and encourage involvement for lifelong participation.
Students will develop stronger leadership and interpersonal skills, whilst learning the values of respecting themselves and others through excellent sportsmanship. They will understand the importance of never giving up, being resilient and striving to be the best they can be in competitive situations and non-competitive situations. As a result of the curriculum fitness levels will improve and students will develop the competence to excel in various physical activities. Their appreciation and understanding of sport at the top level will be enhanced.
Maltings Academy PE department will build the Cultural Capital of students by providing opportunities for all. This is achieved through whole school events such as interform competitions and sports day. We will look into opportunities to watch live international sport with the students, run sports tours and trips (i.e. ski trip).
The Maltings PE curriculum will enable learners to:
Build leadership qualities by leading warm-ups and drills for example, and speak confidently in front of others.
Participate in and develop their sporting abilities in a broad range of physical activities.
Operate in teams - solve problems in how to outwit an opponent or design/choreograph a gymnastics/dance sequence.
Share a mutual respect for others - sportsmanship.
Develop knowledge on the application of skills which can be recalled and progressed upon throughout their learning journey through year 7,8,9.
Share a passion for sport and exercise.
Recognise the importance of physical activity and exercise in improving their physical and mental wellbeing.
Develop a sporting pedagogy where they can make connections between sports as well as topic areas, making students aware of the fundamental skills that underpin sport and exercise.
Enjoy sport for what it is, and keep a lifelong participation in sport.
Having an understanding of the uses and implications of topics covered in Sports Science can support a PE based career pathway.
Subject Implementation
Within the department we have ensured that our curriculum has been collaboratively planned to ensure that experts in those fields have planned and structured lessons to make the best learning experience for students. We are committed to developing our schemes of work to embed challenge, literacy, teamwork and competitiveness. The curriculum is broad and balanced and covers traditional sports in year 7, 8 and 9. Moreover, we have developed greater choice for year 9 and KS4 pupils to sports that are less common to the demographic of Witham to keep students engaged and excited about sport. In all lessons, we embed core skills, knowledge, principles, and confidence across a broad range of activities. A range of strategies are used that demonstrate an adaptive teaching style to support varying needs of each pupil, which will allow for a deeper knowledge so that it is committed to long-term memory. The importance of giving students regular opportunities to implement skills into competitive situations such as game play allows students to deal with emotions that come with winning and losing, which supports their ability to persevere. We strongly recognise the need to make PE fun and to foster a lifelong love of physical activity.
The implementation of the PE curriculum includes:
Be able to complement their sporting commitments outside of school and in some cases give pupils the ability to progress to sporting courses.
Use subject specific vocabulary accurately in lessons and question new words they haven’t heard and learn the meaning.
Make links between sports by identifying where there is a transference of skills learnt in one support that supports the development in another.
Be inquisitive about rules and tactics - transfer knowledge of tactics and rules that would support one game into another.
Pupils will have a drive to succeed, where barriers to development are seen as challenges to overcome and not reasons to give up.
Have a thirst for knowledge: what is my area to develop (HHH)? How can I change the way I train to become fitter and healthier? How can I reduce the risk of injury? How does nutrition influence my ability to play sports? How can I improve my technique?
Develop on strengths and share wisdom with peers. Develop on weaknesses and welcome peer feedback.
Assist peers to improve on their ability through modelling correct movement or by verbally explaining.
Persevere in all lessons and keep trying in both drills, games and theory activities.
Subject Impact
Students participation in lessons and their engagement in developing skills will be high. High participation rates at extracurricular sessions leading to teams winning and placing in competitions at local and regional level. We will achieve high examination results in OCR which is down to staff expertise and the positive learning environment we create in the classroom. Students will know more, remember more and understand more about the curriculum. Students retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning, developing links between sports and transference of skills, techniques and tactics.
A Maltings Academy PE student will:
Be happy and proud to help/support peers and staff with officiating at local competitions and inter house events.
Make links with local clubs and businesses to help provide pathways for students to continue sports and exercise after school.
Develop a passion for sport and exercise, so they have the drive and motivation to want to come to school early and stay after school to extend and develop their love for the subject.
Be able to collaborate with peers and show respect for others.
Recognise strengths and weaknesses in their own and others ability.
Embrace mistakes and have the resilience and perseverance to keep trying.
Develop a better understanding about the relationship between sports and the health and mental benefits that come from it.
Have a well rounded base of knowledge and skills to continue a journey of lifelong participation in sport.
