Art & Design Curriculum 3 I’s
Vision and Intent
In the Art Department our intentions are clear; every pupil is an artist and we want them to embrace their creativity and self expression through the fundamentals of Art that underpin our curriculum. We want pupils to enjoy lessons, grow in confidence with their knowledge, understanding and skills, and develop a passion for the subject that they can take with them after their journey with us has ended.
The Maltings Art and Design curriculum will enable learners to:
Work successfully as a team in order to collaborate, share resources and a studio space, as well as independently, working on their own initiative in order to produce personal outcomes and develop a sense of autonomy in their studies.
Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of the Art curriculum with focus on the formal elements.
Enhance their creativity, not only as an artist, but as a problem solver.
Strengthen multitasking skills that allow pupils to work on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Accept challenge as a positive that will strengthen their technical skillset and artistic ability by stretching their current knowledge further.
Promote strong presentation skills that best reflect them as creative individuals.
Participate in opinion based debate and subjective analysis of others and themselves.
Build their self worth and confidence through personal expression.
Subject Implementation
The department has three specialist teachers who all have a broad range of creative interests and skills that allow for a broader curriculum to be taught, matching the national curriculum requirements.
Student’s abilities differ greatly, especially subject to subject. It is not expected that every pupil will be naturally competent in Art and Design, but what is expected is that pupils try and especially that they enjoy themselves whilst they are in the department no matter what their ability or interest. We as the subject specialists will provide pupils with the fundamental skills and understanding with which to become artists. As a department we pride ourselves in the calm and nurturing environment which we maintain to ensure students feel supported and able to express themselves in.
The implementation of the Art and Design curriculum includes:
Every scheme of work allows students the opportunity to explore and develop skills in a new area; printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. This is the bedrock for success at KS4, as pupils will feel more confident to further develop their skills in these areas and refine their current abilities.
Every scheme of work touches upon a different technical skill that is suited to each individual. Those who are not confident in the practical outcomes, can develop and refine their understanding and appreciation of the subject through critical and analytical thinking and writing allowing for success criteria to be met and progress to be made.
By following the national curriculum requirements at KS3 and developing an aptitude for drawing in preparation for KS4, pupils will be provided with a diverse and rich curriculum throughout their educational journey that will challenge and support pupils to make progress at every stage.
By exposing students to artworks they may never have considered could exist, to seeing links between cultural and social issues and the Art world and to encourage debate, inquiry and passion within the subject will promote exceptional character development.
By advertising current exhibitions or workshops pupils could attend outside of school, to encourage participation in national and in-house competitions, by showing films, documentaries and Ted Talks on the subject will broaden their understanding of Art as well as giving pupils something to take away with them as a memory to cherish, a question to explore and potentially a career path to follow.
Subject Impact
A healthy pace allows students to be engaged, challenged and encourages a positive work ethic.
Challenge allows pupils to be excited about learning and stretching their current skill-set further than they imagined. Every student has a different ability and level to reach, and all are capable of reaching these levels and more through being stretched and challenged, in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Independence allows pupils confidence to grow and be maintained over time. In Art and Design we encourage independent learning. Teachers scaffold the learning, providing an accessible curriculum for all.
Extra curricular activities are embedded within the Academy and are over subscribed within Art.
A Maltings Academy Art and Design student will:
Grow in confidence whilst working independently and as a team.
Show resilience when improving and building on their technical understanding and practical abilities.
Develop a range of practical artistic skills and understanding by focusing on the fundamentals of Art.
Develop presentation skills.
Be able to produce subjective analytical writing and have a deeper theoretical understanding.
Demonstrate understanding and empathy towards different cultures, movements and societies.
Understand Art and its place in the wider world.
Grow inquisitive about the world around them.
