Business Studies Curriculum 3 I’s
Vision and Intent
We believe that in an increasingly changing world of business, students need a deep and varied business studies curriculum that allows them to relate with the environment that surrounds them. For young people to develop the knowledge, confidence and abilities to engage skillfully with the business and economic environment. This will prepare them well for future learning at college, university, employment or enterprise.
Business studies students will engage locally, nationally and globally. Allowing them to apply understanding of business concepts to an array of scenarios, to which students can critically analyse and evaluate business information and data. Going forward to present solutions to positively affect business activity.
Students will be able to measure the business climate; be it past, current or future with know-how and make informed decisions in order to minimise risk and prevent business failure; creating solutions for the short and or long term. A variety of entrepreneurs, including celebrities and some closer to home will guide students by their example and their own successes and failures, presenting opportunities to interrogate mindsets; nurturing their own and inspiring futures.
The Maltings Business curriculum will enable learners to:
Know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society.
Apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts.
Develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen, and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems.
Develop as effective and independent students, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.
Use an enquiring, critical approach to make informed judgements.
Investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well-evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of business.
Develop and apply quantitative skills relevant to business, including using and interpreting data.
Subject Implementation
Our pedagogy is underpinned by a thoroughly structured and evolved approach to the teaching of Business Studies, building concepts from the ground up into complex areas of thinking and analysis. The regular analysis of real world scenarios and case studies keeps students grounded within the practical and applicable elements of the course while growing their mindsets in the business environment. The regular and embedded practice of knowledge retrieval, understanding of assessment objectives and clear writing frames to support students allows all the opportunities to succeed. Regular assessments at the end of topic areas allow for addressing misconceptions as well as building regular opportunities to practice exam technique and skills, as well as the opportunities to put intervention and support in place to help those who need it.

Subject Impact
Students will know more, remember more and understand more about the curriculum. Students retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning. Students must develop an understanding of the interdependent nature of business activity through interactions between business operations, finance, marketing and human resources, as well as the relationship between the business and the environment in which it operates. Students must understand how these interdependencies and relationships underpin business decisions.
A Maltings Academy Business student will:
Apply knowledge and understanding to business decision making, including the interdependent nature of business activity, influences on business, business operations, finance, marketing and human resources; and how these interdependencies underpin business decision making.
How different business contexts affect business decisions.
The use and limitation of quantitative and qualitative data in making business decisions.
Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills relevant to business.
Investigate, analyse and evaluate business opportunities and issues.
Make justified decisions using both qualitative and quantitative data, including its selection, interpretation, analysis and evaluation, and the application of appropriate quantitative skills.
