This summer Maltings Academy returned victorious from their rugby and netball tour of South Africa.  The tour party consisted of seventeen rugby players, eight netball players and four coaches, with a schedule for each team to play at least three games in nine days.  The rugby team played once in Cape Town against Fisantekraal Township School, and won 27-5.  They then travelled along the Garden Route to Knysna and played Wittedrift High School, and won 12-7.  The final leg of the tour took them to Pretoria, where they played Randpark High School, but lost 29-3.  Noticeable performances of the tour came from Michael Harrison (flanker), Andrew Haines (scrum-half), Andrew Harrison (No. 8) and from Darryl Eames (outside-centre).

The netball team played twice in Cape Town, against Fisantekraal Township School, winning 10-9 and against JG Meiring High School, losing 9-5.  In Knysna they played Oakhill High School, and won 18-8.  At Randpark High School, unfortunately they lost 22-3.  Noticeable performances of the tour came from Sophie Griffiths, Ashleigh Ayles, Hannah Whybrew and from Hannah Prosser.

During the tour, the players got to experience much of the country’s varied culture and wildlife.  One of the biggest highlights of the tour was at Newlands Stadium, where the group got to hold the real Rugby World Cup.  The tour captains Stewart Haines and Bethany Vale commented, “This tour has been an incredibly exciting, once in a life time opportunity.  We have all been to South Africa and won a hard tour.”  The tour leader, Mr Garrard said “I am very proud of the students and for what they have achieved.”  Many of the students are looking forward to the next tour in two years time.
