The Department of Science is proud to be one of Maltings’ Specialist departments. Our department is at the forefront of innovative science teaching, and every student who comes to Science will have opportunities that are unique to the academy. Our dedicated and highly qualified team of staff and technicians mean that scientific activities at Maltings Academy are exciting as well as educational. We aim to offer the best possible opportunity to every single student. Recent innovations include a suite of new data logging apparatus for all students, brand new radioactive materials for study in Physics, cryogenic equipment for handling liquid nitrogen for studies down to temperatures as low as -200°C and for allowing chemistry students to work with chemicals that react with oxygen in the air, spectroscopic equipment for use with our Forensic Science course.
At Key Stage Three, our students study Science for six hours per fortnight at present in Years 7 and 8, with an additional hour in Year 9. We use the Go Science course to back up the expertise within the department.
At Key Stage Four, we offer a choice for students, depending on their personal wishes. We offer a longer Sciences course of separates GCSE’s in Chemistry, Physics and Biology, suitable for those students who are likely to take A Level Sciences, as well as a Double Science GCSE course, and the more vocational OCR Nationals Level Two course in Science.
At Key Stage Five, we currently offer all A level Sciences, taught by specialist teachers in every case.
A human being is not attaining his full heights until he is educated.
