Learning and Teaching

At Maltings Academy we pride ourselves on the excellence of our teaching.Within the classroom our students can expect an individualised approach based on their learning capabilities, taking into account their preferred learning styles.

Our students enjoy opportunities to work as a part of groups as well as developing their own independent learning skills. We are able to provide this individualised approach through our effective assessment of our students’ capabilities. Demanding targets are set which challenge our students and encourage them to strive to achieve their best and more. Beyond the classroom, our students are provided with an extensive range of opportunities and we encourage everyone to participate in extra curricular activities according to their talents and interests. From chess to trampolining, dance to IT there is an activity to inspire every child. We aim to develop our students morally, spiritually, physically and socially as part of the all-round high quality educational experience we are delivering to all students who attend the Academy. Much of our success depends upon appropriate curricula, informed by current knowledge and best practice. We aim to meet the needs of every student through our provision of vocational through to highly academic courses, from our gifted and talented programme to our learning support provision. Our specialisms of sport and science provide opportunities for every student to develop their potential. Our aim is to equip them for the demands of the 21st century, by creating happy, confident young people.

We will encourage creative, responsive and effective approches to learning and teaching.

Curriculum

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum to our students. Whilst meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum, the programmes of study extend beyond those limits and the range of subjects is wider.

In the later years, the curriculum is more flexible, allowing students greater choice in the subjects they study.

Careful counselling ensures that no premature course specialisation takes place, which could limit future career or higher education aspirations. The Academy is also committed to equality of opportunity.

Public examination success is regarded as a priority for all students at Maltings Academy. All students can enjoy their learning and gain knowledge and skills which will be essential for them to flourish in 21st century society.

Target Setting

We introduced ‘Target Setting Days’ into our annual programme of events to support our students in achieving their best during their time in the Academy.

The aims of these days are:

  • For students to set some clear targets which will add direction to their studies so that their work can improve.
  • To provide some quality time for parents and students to discuss their progress and any other important matters with tutors.
  • To provide additional meetings with other relevant members of staff.

During the meetings with students and parents tutors use school data for each individual student to assess whether they are making the expected amount of progress or have made better or worse than expected progress.

Gifted and Talented

Maltings Academy recognises that we have students who are gifted academically and have specific talents. We understand that the curriculum we offer should stimulate, challenge and support these students. We also know that some students may develop or display their ability less readily than others for a variety of reasons such as peer pressure, motivation and/or cultural differences. Our aim at Maltings Academy is to create an environment where these students are not only comfortable with their abilities, but are celebrated and nurtured.

Maltings Academy Gifted and Talented Policy

Gifted and Talented children are those who have one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop these abilities.)

“Gifted” refers to those students who are or are capable of excelling in academic subjects such as English, Maths or Science.

“Talented” students may excel in areas requiring more practical abilities, such as games and PE, Music, Drama, or Art.
