Technology is part of the entitlement curriculum for all pupils to the age of fourteen (KS3) and optional for pupils to the age of sixteen (KS4).
Design Technology is concerned with the application and development of a wide range of knowledge and practical skills required during the process of designing and making.
Pupils experience a carousel curriculum in years 7, 8 and 9 during which they will experience material areas including:
This two year full GCSE course is concerned with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to design quality Manufactured Products. These include, furniture & lighting, model making and proto-typing of products, as well as packaging, point of sale displays and advertising posters and other three dimensional promotional products.
During this course students will undertake a range of designs and make projects using a variety of resistant materials such as wood, metal and plastics. There will also be the opportunity to use ICT skills such as Computer Aided Design.
Students will be introduced to different practical skills and techniques including cutting and shaping material, hand finishing techniques and using workshop machinery such as lathes, milling machines and heat treatment processes.
You must be able to communicate design ideas using drawing techniques if you want to select this course. Students will be introduced to different graphical techniques including 3D isometric sketching, oblique projection, 3rd angle orthographic projection, colour rendering using pencils and felts; designing logos and lettering styles and basic geometric construction.
Assessment takes the form of a final coursework project that makes up 60% of the total marks. It is at this stage that pupils decide whether their work will be Resistant Materials or Graphics bias.
We offer AS and A2 courses in Product Design.
The aim of this course is to enable students to develop their own innovation, creativity and design and technology capability; to be able to produce high quality products. Students will develop a critical understanding of the processes involved with design process. ICT and CAD (Computer Aided Design) skills are taught to enhance presentation and design communication.
On Friday morning pupils from year 7 have been enjoying building two off road 'wasp karts'.
The Maltings Missile of Maltings Academy, Witham is a Greenpower Formula 24 volt electric motor-racing car, allowing us to compete in a number of Greenpower endurance races throughout the country on well known motor racing circuits. The Greenpower Formula 24 cars are designed and built within the schools with the help of teachers, co-opted external engineers, parents and sponsoring companies.
