School Report News Day, on 4th December 2009, when students in over 500 UK schools simultaneously make and broadcast their news for real, is the culmination of the BBC News project.
On the morning of Friday December 4th students from across Year 7 and 8 gathered to participate in the BBC News School Report for Maltings Academy.
This was the culmination of their term’s work – students have been training in journalism since September, and this was their opportunity to spend a day working as a real-life journalist with deadlines, ever-changing stories and interviews to conduct.
The day began with the election of an editor and assistant – Charlotte Ashbey was elected by the news team, ably supported by Michael Upson.
Then followed the news meeting. Students discussed the most recent news stories, on local, national and international scales, and decided which stories were important to them. Topics ranging from the 2010 World Cup, the recent fires and floods in Cumbria, to National Tree Week were put forward. Journalists were allocated to the different stories and began reading, researching and interviewing for the content of their articles.
With the 1.30pm deadline fast approaching students had to work quickly to finalise their stories, editing them as the news itself developed.
The day was clearly a great success – students found the day “educational, interesting and fun” and were glad that “it introduced journalism skills at a young age”. The resultant articles can be viewed below.
The course will be running again in the Spring, with all students in Years 7 and 8 welcome to sign up!
Mr. P. McKenna
Throughout Maltings Academy year sevens and eights have worked their hardest to get the school report up and running.
